After finishing a certificate in Advanced GIS from UW-Madison in 2020, I started to reach out to my network for job leads, eager to find a role where I could use my shiny new skills.
A friend connected me with Sahana, who was kind enough to talk to me about all things Regrid. Not long after that, I started working on the Data Team as a contractor, which gave me a chance to get familiar with the data, the workflow, and the virtual-workplace culture. A couple of months into the gig, I happily came on board as an employee.
In my role as a Spatial Data Scientist, I help shepherd the parcel data from diverse sources and formats to the neat-and-standardized final product, as well as explore ways to enhance what we offer. One of the things I love about this job is the wide variety of skills I get to exercise and learn: In addition to spatial data tools, I’ve been able to call on my old cartographic and coding skills, and I’m writing regular expressions that would have been inscrutable nonsense to me a year ago.
Plus, there’s a lot of good old-fashioned detective work, which is always fun.
In addition to the encouragement to learn new skills, one of the things I appreciate about working at Regrid is the openness to suggestions. My team really feels like a team; everyone’s input is valued, and new ideas can be implemented quickly. Finally, I just enjoy my colleagues; everyone takes the work seriously, but nobody takes themselves too seriously. It’s a pleasure to work for a company that cultivates such a collegial environment.
