In May 2025, we will be transitioning to a new structure for our FileGDB zip files.
Currently, we compress the individual FileGDB component files into a zip file with the state_county.gdb.zip filename convention (e.g., tx_harris.gdb.zip).
Current zip structure example:
Starting in May 2025, we will transition to zipping a folder with the state_county.gdb folder name (e.g., tx_harris.gdb) that contains the FileGDB component files instead.
Upcoming zip structure example:
While the naming convention for the resulting zip file will remain the same (e.g., tx_harris.gdb.zip), this structural change of the zip file itself will likely impact existing ETL pipelines, particularly those with specific extraction logic, path assumptions, or file validation processes.
To help you prepare for this transition, we have provided sample files in your current download directory in a new directory named 'geodb_new_structure'. We strongly recommend testing your processes with these files to identify and address any potential issues before the full transition.
When we change to the new zip file layout, the existing directory name you currently retrieve files from will not change so your path to the files will not need any updating, just the zip file extraction process may need updating.
The new structure better preserves FileGDB integrity and is more compatible with ESRI and other GIS software.
